Giving the Gift Of Family History

Genealogy has become extremely popular as peoples' interest in their families, their roots and their histories increased. As genealogy popularity as a hobby increased, so has its potential as a thoughtful gift to give to family members, friends and anyone else who has an interest in their heritage.

  
Below are a few ideas for gifts with a genealogical theme.

Genealogy software. In the past when people wished to do family research, it was a very time and labor intensive process involving going to libraries and dusty basements and searching through records and archives by hand. There is now software that does this research with a few clicks of the mouse. Most of this family tree research software are intuitive and user friendly.

Heraldry. A lot of family names are connected to royalty or entitlements that confer a coat of arms or some other form of heraldry that can be displayed in the home and make an excellent addition to the décor. There are many companies that specialize in putting coats of arms on documents, frames or other forms of heraldic display. This is the kind of gift that can be proudly displayed and appreciated over time.

A written family history. Genealogical researchers often assemble family histories into one coherent storybook. Sometimes this could be the family's settlement in the new world up to the present, or their particular answer to the call of manifest destiny. The epic saga of a family's history can be a keepsake for all the family to enjoy.

Family name history. A written account about a family's surname, where it originated, and what it means, and who also carried the name can be fascinating reading.

A photographic chronicle. Taking old photos and restoring them, providing labels describing the people in them and laying the photos out in an inexpensive photo album is a good way to give a gift that would be loved and appreciated by the recipients. Photos can also be scanned and put into electronic form so they can be easily distributed or printed out on new glossy photo paper.

Any of the aforementioned gift ideas would be appropriate for anyone with an abiding interest or love of genealogy. A few other ideas that could be used as possible gifts are, a family bible to be used to record important family events like births, weddings and deaths; tuition for a history enthusiast to attend classes at the local university or community college to improve knowledge and skills in research; or taking an old photo or portrait of a family member and having it enlarged and framed.

What was once thought the rubric of hobbyists who devote way too much time in musty basements; genealogy is now considered a fun way to spend time with family. With the knowledge gained, families can watch movies or television programs concerning certain periods of time or events with renewed interest knowing how their ancestors lived in the past or played a part in history.
